A mountain with its own character

More than a
warm-up climb.

Mount Meru rises inside Arusha National Park. The standard journey starts at Momella Gate, moves through forest and climbs towards the mountain huts before reaching the higher volcanic terrain. A park ranger accompanies trekkers through the park.

This is a mountain to choose for the experience itself: changing vegetation, hut-based nights and a demanding summit approach. It offers a different rhythm from a Kilimanjaro camping itinerary.

A shorter holiday does not have to mean an easier climb. Meru's summit day is a serious undertaking. Talk with our mountain team about the terrain, walking commitment and time available before deciding on your schedule.

Choose your walking rhythm

Three days or four?

4-day Mount Meru climb

Begin with the ascent to Miriakamba Hut, then continue to Saddle Hut. After the summit attempt, descend to Miriakamba for another night. The last day takes you back to Momella Gate.

This separates the descent to the gate from summit day. It gives you a different pace for the journey down, while the summit stage remains demanding.

3-day Mount Meru climb

The first two nights are normally at Miriakamba and Saddle. The final day combines the summit attempt with the descent all the way to Momella Gate.

Expect a much longer final walking day. Share your trekking experience with us so we can discuss whether this condensed schedule fits your plans.

On the trail

Forest, huts
and high ridges.

From Momella, the trail leads into mountain forest towards Miriakamba. The next stage climbs towards Saddle Hut, with Little Meru sometimes included as an additional walk depending on the schedule and conditions.

The summit approach passes Rhino Point and follows more exposed, rocky terrain. The summit attempt typically begins in darkness, making a headtorch, warm layers and careful footing essential parts of your preparation.

Mountain huts offer a different overnight experience from tents. Keep warm sleeping layers and personal essentials ready, and speak to your guide about the next day's walking before settling in.

Build your Tanzania journey

Meru first.
More to discover.

Choose Meru on its own, or tell us if you would like to combine it with Kilimanjaro. The time between climbs matters: allow room for travel, rest and a plan that suits your experience.

A northern Tanzania safari offers a very different experience after the mountain. If you prefer a shorter outing, a village visit or day trip can fit around your return to town.

Share your flight details, accommodation preferences and the number of people travelling. Your local team can bring the practical arrangements together in a personal proposal.

Before you decide

Your questions,
answered.

Have something else on your mind? Tell us when you enquire.

Should I choose three or four days?

The four-day climb separates the final descent into another day. The three-day version combines the summit attempt with a much longer descent. Discuss your experience and the walking involved with our mountain team.

Is Mount Meru just preparation for Kilimanjaro?

No. Meru is a rewarding mountain journey in its own right. It can also be part of a longer trekking holiday, with time between climbs planned around your experience and travel schedule.

Where do I sleep?

The standard ascent uses shared mountain huts at Miriakamba and Saddle. Your proposal explains the nights, meals and equipment for your chosen schedule.

Can I start from Moshi?

Tell us where you will stay and share your arrival plans. Sunset can discuss the journey to Arusha National Park and arrange the climb around your wider trip.

Is reaching the summit guaranteed?

No. Weather, trail conditions and your response to altitude affect the climb. Your guide helps assess the day and a change of plan may be needed.
